Energy drain is a common feature in our face paced lives. It can affect us physically in terms of body ache, fatigue, etc. It could also make us feel a lack of motivation to pursue activities that we like. However, the good news is that there are ways to counter low energy levels.

Let us understand why we feel a lack of energy. There are various causes for energy depletion. Some of them are:

1. Improper nourishment: Our hectic schedules have driven us towards fast foods. These contain unhealthy elements. This results in giving us a drained out feeling most of the time.

2. Inadequate rest: We have made our lives so busy that we are hardly left with any time for relaxation. Our bodies and minds are deprived of rest. Hence, we are tired most of the time.

3. Lack of exercise: Regular exercise helps in boosting energy levels as it helps in secretion of energy boosting hormones. Most of us lead sedentary lifestyles and therefore deprive ourselves of these vital hormones.

4. Stress: It is one of the most important causes for lack of energy. If our minds are not at peace, we cannot be relaxed. For complete relaxation of the body, it is essential to relax the mind.

All these factors can be summarized as leading an unhealthy lifestyle. You can lead a life where you do not feel drained and fatigued by just making simple changes in your lifestyle.

Tips for boosting energy levels:

1. Include Magnesium in your diet:

Magnesium performs numerous biochemical reactions in the body including breaking glucose into energy. Therefore, it is beneficial to include magnesium-rich foods such as almonds, hazelnuts, or cashews in your diet. Fish such as Halibut also increases the Magnesium levels.

2. Go for regular Walks:

Walking is one of the simplest exercises. It does not require any equipment and can be done by anyone. Most of us avoid it due to lack of time or lack of energy. But the irony is that a walk boosts your energy levels.

3. Don't skip your meals:

Your body needs all the minerals and vitamins. Hence, it is essential not to skip your meals.

4. Meditate:

Stress leaves an individual mentally and physically drained. One of the best ways to counter stress is through meditation.

5. Reduce intake of alcohol:

Cutting down on your alcohol intake in the evening, helps you get a good night's rest. This helps you reenergize for the next day.

6. Drink more water:

Keeping your body hydrated is one of the simplest ways of keeping off exhaustion.

Although this list is not comprehensive, these are some of the easy to follow tips to enhance energy levels.

Lack of energy is a common affliction these days. One of the simplest ways to boost energy levels is by taking Addrena, a herbal supplement with no side-effects. To know more visit here.

You've just slipped off into a nice, deep sleep--

Suddenly your foot or leg seizes up, bolting you out of bed to 'work it out'. Laying back down, you PRAY to get back to sleep. SOON. (And, hopefully, without another round of cramping to follow.)

Sound familiar? Leg cramps are an issue that affect many people, and sometimes increase with age. But that doesn't necessarily mean they can't be turned around. The list below includes a number of reasons why leg cramps develop, and for some folks there may be more than one contributing factor. Study the list, study your lifestyle, nutrition and eating habits, and make the changes necessary to help bring leg cramps to a halt.

(Of course, if simple dietary and lifestyle changes do not get the job done, see your health care practitioner.)

·         Not enough magnesium in your diet

·         Sodium/Potassium imbalance: over-exercising w/o replenishing electrolytes, or excessive salty foods (Check: salty snacks, lunchmeats, packaged and restaurant food)

·         Excess fat in diet, especially poor quality (see: “Nourishing Traditions” by Sally Fallon)

·         Not enough calcium

·         Heavy exposure to EMF's (electro-magnetic frequency), RF's (radio frequency) from appliances, Wi-Fi, cell phones, fluorescent lighting and smart meters: research shows these all reduce circulation AND increase inflammation in everyone, whether or not there are felt symptoms

·         Overeating at dinnertime

·         Eating your dinner (any amount) after 7:30 p.m.

·         Lack of exercise

Some folks report that by just including one serving EVERY day of a dark, green, leafy vegetable: broccoli, turnip greens, kale, swiss chard, radish greens or collards (salads and spinach won't help)--that their leg cramps disappear. Others have reduced or eliminated leg cramps—especially deep in the joints, or even restless leg syndrome--by walking barefoot on grass more often and/or by using Earthing products. (Call our staff at Nutrients, Etc. for more information on these amazing products: our prices match the manufacturers, and we ship free over $100.00.)

For others, just getting a meal in the belly early evening instead of later makes ALL the difference.

So take a look at what needs changing in your daily routine, and take control of leg cramps!

While some folks are fine with the change in formula that Enzymatic Therapy chose for this product, we've received complaints from many others. The following are some frequently asked questions, with our responses:

Q: Why don't you still carry the original formula?

A: The manufacturer made this choice without our knowledge, and the old formula is no longer available.

Q: Why are the capsules so big, and why do I have to take twice as many now?

A: Different raw materials are being used, and it takes a larger volume of these materials to provide the same dose of magnesium you received in the original formula.

Q: I don't like swallowing so many pills, and these pills are too big for me. What else can I take?

A: After thoroughly researching all magnesium supplements available, Dr. Biddle has chosen Chelated Magnesium Bisglycinate from Bluebonnet, and he recommends shifting to this product.

Q: But they are only 100mg. per cap. How many will I have to take?

A: Only ONE100mg. capsule was found to produce the same results as 250mg. of the new Krebs formula! Magnesium bisglycinate is known to be one of the most bioavailable/absorbable forms of magnesium on the market, and the numerous staff members and patients who tested this formula all agree.

Q: But where's the potassium?

A: Unless your lab results showed a need for potassium, it is an unnecessary part of the formula.

Nutrients Etc. sells Chelated Magnesium Bisglycinate in bottles of 60 or 120 caps. They are available through this webstore, in-store, or ordering by phone. Should you have any more questions about these products, please don't hesitate to call us.

That first tinge of fall is scenting the air, with cherry trees going golden here in Asheville. Our earliest trees to shed leaves, they color up and fly loose far ahead of the October 'leaf season' that the remainder of our trees wait for. . .

The change of seasons brings health challenges for many of us. Yet a simple study of how the plants and wild animals behave during seasonal changes can give you many clues about how to optimally maintain your health year-round. For instance, primitive cultures have understood for thousands of years that Fall is a time to finish gathering up and putting by the harvest, to begin to rest, to take pause. "Civilized" humans have lost touch with this in our 'hurry-up' world. We forget to heed that calling to SLOW DOWN and take stock, to literally 'harvest' all the experiences of our year and 'compost' all the excess thinking and worrying. Try this: Create quiet time in nature where all you think of--indeed, all you are present with--is the beauty all around you!

Still, having your 'medicine' cabinet stocked with good quality alternative products to either help you resist (or shorten the duration of) the colds and flus that inevitably start going around is a smart move. There are three products that you'll find in most of our staff's cabinets year-round: Wellness Herbal Resistance Liquid, Respigard, and Transfer Factor Classic. In this issue, we'll focus on Wellness Herbal Resistance.

We can't say enough about Wellness Herbal Resistance! A favorite of both staff and customers, we get reports all the time of how it stopped a cold or flu flat before it even had a chance to take hold.

Comprised of some of the best known immune-building Western herbs*, it also contains a centuries revered, ancient Chinese formulation known as Yin Chiao. Developed in the early years of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), Yin Chiao is the single most widely used herbal formula in the world, prescribed routinely by acupuncturists and herbalists specifically for imbalances due to the shift of seasons into fall and winter.

Folks tell us that they typically take the Wellness Herbal Resistance Liquid in response to a feeling of lethargy, b4 plane trips, upon the first sign of a cold or flu, or immediately after exposure. Most folks have great results with two full droppers 3X daily for 3 days. If immediate improvement is not obvious within 24 hours, they then add in Respigard and/or Transfer Factor Classic.

We're already stocking up on these formulas for you, so feel free to place an order so that you have them the moment they are needed!

*see the website page for a full listing of ingredients, etc. Wellness Formula is not recommended for those with auto-immune disease.

No first-aid kit--whether for home or for travel--should be without Lavender Essential Oil! Applied early to an unbroken sunburn*, then re-applied as needed when the sunburn begins to feel hot to the touch again--folks are amazed to watch their sunburn turn to a golden tan with NO peeling.

Kitchen burns also heal remarkably fast, and often scar-free, when lavender oil is used. For painful kitchen burns (but only those that do not need hospital care), alternately dip the affected part in salted ice-water to numb the pain, gently pat dry, then re-apply lavender oil. Again, repeat as needed.

REMEMBER:Coat UNBROKEN SKIN ONLY (whether sunburned or kitchen burns) with a layer of full-strength Certified Organic Lavender Oil. Re-apply as often as needed. Do NOT add other products to the oil, as they will dilute its effectiveness and are simply not necessary.

*Of course, it is important to avoid sunburn as much as possible! See our products: Just Skin Food (non-toxic SPF30 sunscreen), Fernblock, and Calaguala (protects hair, skin, & eyes and won't wash off!) for natural and non-toxic ways to prevent excess exposure to UVA's and UVB.

Just Skin Food

Natural and Organic

SPF 30

We LOVE this sunscreen! Mixed in small batches and made with the safest of ingredients, it is currently the CLEANEST, SAFEST sunscreen available. Plus, unlike most sunscreens, it protects you from UVB as well as from UVA1 and UVA2 (the UVA rays have been found to be more cancer-causing than UVB alone), due to the use of zinc oxide as it’s active ingredient. By European standards, most American sunscreens would be considered illegal, as NO MATTER WHAT SPF RATING THEY SHOW (even if as high as 50+) their protection against UVA’s is far too low to pass Europe’s rightfully stringent safety laws.

Yet we haven’t even tackled the issues with toxicity. Hormone-disrupting chemicals (oxybenzone is only one), as well as the use of retinyl palmitate, which, when exposed to sun can actually increase the rate of malignant (cancer) cell development and spread are common ingredients in poor-quality sunscreens. Dangerous spray sunscreens, known carcinogenic fragrances. . . the list goes on.

For more information about why you should probably 'chuck' the sunscreen you currently own, google: EWG Releases Toxic Sunscreens List.

‘Just Skin Food’ Ingredients:

Active: 35% non-nano zinc oxide. Other ingredients: OG coconut oil, OG raw unrefined shea butter, OG mango butter, and OG cocoa butter, local beeswax, and non-gmo vitamin E (OG=organic)

Warmer weather brings more outdoor time, but the excitement of these activities causes many folks to rush out and skip breakfast.

Extra exercise, however, demands good quality nutrition! To keep your energy high and prevent that inevitable blood sugar slump from catching up with you, try this recipe for our favorite breakfast smoothie. Loaded with super-foods, it is one of the top-requested recipes in our store, and leftovers keep for days in the refrigerator thanks to the natural probiotics in the yogurt. . .

Breakfast Smoothie – 2 servings

2 Brazil nuts, chopped (selenium-packed!)

1 – 2 Tabl. Nutiva Hemp Seeds (EFA, protein, zinc and magnesium-packed!)

2 – 3  Tabl. Cacao nibs (high mag., plus unprocessed—so they’re loaded with “bliss factor”: anandamide)

1 c. halved strawberries (or other favorite fruit/combos)*

½ c. filtered or spring water

1 - 1 ½ c. Seven Stars Organic whole milk yogurt (The Best!), or your dairy-free brand of choice

4 – 6  Tabl. Coconut oil or Coconut Cream Concentrate (Dr. recommended daily intake: 2 – 3 Tabl.)

For best processing, add all the above ingredients into a blender in the order given. Blend until almost smooth (I like to leave the cacao nibs a tad chunky, as they are fun to bite, and this also reminds me to “chew” my meal, slowing me down and adding those important natural digestive enzymes from your saliva.) “Re-heat” leftovers by placing the jar in a bowl of hot water to melt down the seized-up coconut oil. DO NOT MICROWAVE.

*(Can’t use fruit? Baked sweet potato w/peel, or baked winter squash are incredibly delicious in place of fruit in this recipe. I also switch to them in early fall through early spring—they’re naturally ‘warming’ to the body compared to the cooling nature of raw fruit—and eat this for breakfast year-round!)

Proven Respiratory Herbal

Wild-crafted Red Mangrove Root from Fiji comprises this little bottle of herbal wonders! A staff and customer favorite at Nutrients, Etc., Red Mangrove Root has been used for centuries in Fiji, Tonga and Samoa. Its active ingredients are known to be anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-pyretic (anti-fever), immune system boosting, anti-inflammatory AND anti-oxidant!

CEO Dr. Ted Anders was lucky enough to get in a conversation about this herbal with the local folk while on a business trip to Fiji. With a young daughter suffering from repetitive ear, nasal and sinus infections, he knew he had stumbled upon something very important when the use of this root got results that standard medical treatment had been unable to provide.

Dr. Scott Carroll, M.D., is also sold on this amazing product. After conducting clinical trials in Atlanta, Georgia at one of the largest privately held Asthma and Allergy Institutes in the U.S., and wanting to research a replacement for overused antibiotics, this is what he found:

“. . .Over 79% of the patients who received the extract at the onset of their (upper and/or lower respiratory tract) infection had complete resolution of their symptoms within 2 days. The common cold usually lasts 7 – 10 days.”

Yet one more great thing about this product? It’s flavor is naturally reminiscent of butterscotch, so you won’t find anyone refusing to take it!

It’s mid-February according to the calendar, with a blizzard watch posted from Boston to Nova Scotia, making it hard for most folks in the NorthEast to imagine that Spring is just around the corner. . .

Yet it’s important to realize that our bodies respond to seasonal changes just like the wild animals and plants that inhabit the land around us, not to a date on a calendar. Here in Western North Carolina, the Great Horned Owl began its mating calls two weeks earlier than usual, and many rose bushes are already pushing forth their serrated, shiny young leaves. Even if a killing frost takes those leaves (and odds are that it will) this upward “Spring”-ing of energy is happening within your body as well, based on the nuances of the temperature zone you live in.

Numerous ancient healing modalities recognize the liver as an organ needing attention in the Spring. We are intuitively drawn to more dark, leafy greens and raw vegetables well in advance of March 20th, an innate response to our liver’s desire to do some Spring Cleaning of its own. Juicing, fasting, harvesting and eating wild greens such as garlic chives and dandelion leaves-- these are all great ways to come into balance as Winter and Spring go through their yearly battles.

Here at our store, a favorite supplement for supporting “Spring Cleaning,” (or cleansing anytime when needed) is DeTox Formula by Vital Nutrients. From the company:

“DeTox Formula is a unique combination of nutrients designed to promote healthy liver function. The formula contains conditionally essential amino acids utilized in the body’s detoxification pathways, as well as herbs that help maintain liver health. The precursors of glutathione are included, along with natural sources of sulfur, which support detoxification enzyme activity. The high antioxidant content enhances the body’s natural defense systems.”

Listen to your Liver, eat well, exercise, and create a healthy, happy Spring!

High in fiber and high in omega-3 fatty acids, this little seed is often used to improve digestive health and relieve constipation. To receive its benefits, however, it’s important to keep a few things in mind:

·         Always buy whole, certified organic seed, and grind them yourself in a coffee or herb grinder

·         Trust your nose! If they smell odd or fishy, they are going rancid: dispose

·         Grind fresh every time you use them: the oils turn rancid quickly!

·         About 2 Tbl. daily is typically doctor recommended

·         Sprinkle on cereal, or add to mayonnaise/mustard or yogurt (then ALWAYS drink extra water later)

·         Alternatively, stir into a tall glass of water and drink immediately, “chewing” on the crushed seeds

(NOTE: Don’t take flax at the same time as your supplements or medicines. For folks on blood thinners, and/or with hormone or bowel issues, consult w/your doctor first.)

Have a Coconut Cream Hot Cocoa!

One of our favorite recipes for both customers and staff alike is this dairy-free hot cocoa. The following recipe makes enough for one person. . . but why stop there?

 2 tsp. organic cocoa powder

1 Tbl. organic maple syrup, or 3 drops of Stevia liquid

2 Tbl. Tropical Traditions Coconut Cream Concentrate

1/8 tsp. real vanilla extract

Pinch of Celtic Sea Salt

1/16 – 1/8 tsp. nutmeg (fresh grated is yummiest!)

(optional:  a sprinkle each of cinnamon and chipotle powder, OR  add a drop of peppermint extract)

Put all the above ingredients in a mug. Then add approx. 1/3 of:

12 oz. boiling water (don’t change this quantity until after trying it. It’s in proper ratio to the cocoa powder to prevent bitterness)

Mix well with a spoon or small whisk. When fully blended, add remaining hot water and mix thoroughly. Have the spoon/whisk nearby while sipping and mix as needed to keep ingredients from settling out.
